AT LEAST 10 employees of Mandaue’s two town hall offices have tested positive for drug use following random drug tests carried out last week.

The test samples were subjected to confirmatory testing and only eight of the employees completed the testing.

The two employees of the Department of General Services (DGS) and the Bureau of Environment and Natural Resources of the city of Mandaue (Macenro) did not undergo the confirmation test, and they will be asked to explain why, said City Councilor Nerissa Soon-Ruiz, president of the health committee and focal point of the City Anti-Drug Council (Cadac).

Ruiz said they are still awaiting the results of confirmatory tests on the eight employees.

If those eight employees test positive for drug use in confirmatory testing, Ruiz said they would be called by their department heads and the mayor’s office for an investigation and receive due process.

Ruiz said employees who tested positive for illegal drug use were generally fired.

A total of 515 employees were tested: 450 from DGS and 65 from Macenro. Eight of the employees who tested positive for drug use are from DGS, while two are from Macenro.

Ruiz said she was frustrated that there were still city hall workers using illegal drugs despite their efforts to discourage people from using banned substances.

The councilor warned city hall workers of another random drug test at their respective offices, saying the city government was very strict on cleaning up its ranks.

Last November, seven staff from the City Health Office, the Emergency Operations Center and the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office tested positive for illegal drug use. Ruiz did not disclose the results of confirmatory testing, however. (MKG)
