A MONMOUTH teenager who campaigned to make gardeners more aware of hedgehogs has seen his campaign lead to real change – following the backing of a major equipment manufacturer.
Dylan Allman, 15, has spent the past two years raising awareness about hedgehogs – giving talks to local community groups, making films, hosting live events and working with the local rescue centre.
Now, at the start of Hedgehog Awareness Week 2022, Dylan has announced that his campaign has scored a major victory – thanks to Hyundai Power Products.
Many hedgehogs suffer horrific injuries every year from gardening equipment because people forget to check before they start trimming and shearing, so Dylan contacted Roland Llewellin, managing director of Genpower Ltd, a UK Hyundai distributor Power Products, to tell them about its campaign.
Following this, Hyundai Power Products agreed that every lawnmower and brushcutter would be sold with a “Be Hedgehog Aware” sticker on it.
“People don’t keep the boxes the equipment comes in, and they have to be reminded to look for hedgehogs every time they’re about to prune or mow,” Dylan said.
“A sticker on the equipment itself reminds the gardener to check for hedgehogs first, which means they are much less likely to be harmed if discovered before the start of the season. cutting or shearing.”
“We are delighted that Hyundai Power Products is working with Dylan and his ‘Hedgehog Aware’ campaign,” said Llewellin. “It’s a very worthwhile cause and also very inspiring to see someone Dylan’s age pushing this forward.
“The first batch of machines with the stickers have just rolled off the production line, and we can’t wait to get them out to gardeners across the UK and start making a difference to help reduce the number of injured hedgehogs in gardens. .”
As part of Hedgehog Awareness Week 2022, Dylan will be live-streaming an event on Saturday May 7 on his ‘hedgehogaware’ YouTube channel, where he will be joined by Mr Llewellin, as well as the local rescue centre.
Grace Johnson, hedgehog manager for Hedgehog Street – a joint campaign between wildlife charities People’s Trust for Endangered Species and the British Hedgehog Preservation Society – said: ‘Dylan is a fantastic hedgehog champion who really makes a difference to people. hedgehogs.
“We are delighted that Hyundai Power Products is supporting Dylan, and we hope that many other organizations will follow suit and ensure that anyone using their products is ‘hedgehog aware’ when gardening.”
