Over Rs 400 Crore spent on ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ media advocacy campaign

The government has spent about Rs 401.04 crore on the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Program (BBBP) media outreach campaign, accounting for 58 percent of the total program expenditure, it said on Wednesday.

Responding to a question in Rajya Sabha, Minister of Women and Child Development, Smriti Irani said that a total expenditure of Rs 683.05 crore was earmarked for the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao program from 2014- 15 to 2020-21.

The program aims to address declining child sex ratio (CSR) and issues of empowerment of girls and women “along a life cycle continuum”.

The main objectives of the program are the prevention of selective elimination based on gender, the guarantee of the survival and protection of girls and their education.

Ms Irani, in a written response, said key elements of the program include nationwide media and advocacy campaigns.

In accordance with program guidelines, funds are earmarked for districts to expand community outreach and raise awareness through various media campaigns, she said.
