On Saturday April 23, our fire department held its annual firefighter competition and this year combined it with Family Day.
About 500 firefighters and family members gathered at Henderson Stadium to watch men and women from different stations go head-to-head in the competition. It was made up of ten teams, each with nine firefighters, competing in several agility obstacles, including daily firefighter skills.
During this competition and before, their families grilled hamburgers, hot dogs and ribs. Children were also entertained with inflatables and games.
“It was a way for us to reunite firefighters with their families at home and at work in a relaxed atmosphere,” said fire chief Shane Edwards. “It’s all about the camaraderie of our team, and events like this are what keep morale high.
They had around $1,400 in prizes up for grabs, including gift cards and t-shirts. The grand prize was a one-night stay at Hotel 45, plus cocktails and dinner for two.
The winner of this year’s competition was 1 Shift B Battalion. They will now represent the Macon-Bibb County Fire Department in the Georgia State Firefighters Competition in the fall.
