This Hospital is Conducting PCOS Awareness Campaign in Schools and Colleges in Mira-Bhayandar

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is not only a concern for women of childbearing age, but also for young teenage girls. Currently, a large number of young teenagers are diagnosed with PCOS due to their sedentary lifestyle. As a result, Wockhardt Hospital, Mira Road has developed an excellent initiative.

The hospital conducted talks and health awareness campaigns in 4 schools/universities near Bhayandar and Mira Road areas, and about 900 students participated in the activity and pledged to lead a healthy life .

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is caused by hormonal disorders in teenage girls and women of childbearing age. Various factors such as obesity, family history, and irregular menstruation can lead to PCOS. A person with PCOS will notice a higher production of male hormones. Other red flags are insulin resistance, acne, and dark spots on the skin. It is essential to understand the consequences of PCOS and seek prompt intervention. Failing to manage it can invite hypertension, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and infertility later in life. To help young girls dispel their doubts and bust the myths about PCOS, Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road has taken a big step by organizing an interesting awareness activity.

Dr. Rajashri Tayshete Bhasale, Consultant Gynecologist and Obstetrician, Laparoscopic Surgeon, Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road said, “PCOS awareness is very low in the country among young girls. Signs such as irregular periods, acne, hirsutism, weight gain, and obesity should not be taken lightly, as all of these can increase the risk of PCOS. 4 in 10 girls in the 14-20 age group suffer from menstrual irregularities, and the majority are due to PCOD which is preventable and treatable. We went to 5 schools/colleges namely SN College, Don Bosco High School, Poddar School & Junior College, Golden English High School located in Bhayandar and Mira Road areas. About 900 students attended the session. We educated young girls about PCOS, its warning signs, causes and why it is essential to talk about it and seek timely treatment. We also encouraged the girls to adopt a healthy lifestyle, such as eating a balanced diet, avoiding junk and processed foods, staying stress-free, exercising daily, and maintaining an optimal weight. We are pleased with the positive response we have received through this activity. Many girls had questions regarding the period which we answered by giving them appropriate solutions. The students even pledged to lead a healthy lifestyle. We hope to carry out more such awareness initiatives in the near future for the benefit of society.

Ravi Vittal, Principal of Golden Nest English High School, said, “We thank Wockhardt Hospitals for taking such an incredible initiative and helping young girls understand PCOS-related FACTS. We are looking for other such sessions by the hospital and will cooperate in any way possible to make them happen. The session will benefit the girls as they were able to dispel all their misconceptions related to this condition. We hope the girls will take great care of themselves.

“Menstruation is considered a taboo in society, but now many people are coming out openly and talking about it. Given the low awareness of PCOS, it is also important to highlight this topic. The session on PCOS conducted by the Wockhardt Hospital is an eye opener for us. We will make sure to follow the guidelines given by the experts,” said Cherry, student.
